Abstract

Wie waren de Vijftigers ook alweer? Wat betekent expressionisme? Of modernisme? (bron: covertekst)

Abstract

"An engaging collection of voices commemorate the first two centuries of Austen's reception in this volume. These essays share a commitment to level academic and public discourse on Austen and to embrace Austen's multimedia legacy." - Inger S. B. Brody, Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA Austen After 200 explores our contemporary relationship with Jane Austen in the wake of the bicentenaries of her death and the first publication of her novels. The volume begins by looking at Austen's popular appeal and at how she is consumed today in diverse cultural venues such the digisphere, blogosphere, festivals and book clubs. It then offers new approaches to the novels within various critical contexts, including adaptation studies, fan fiction, intertextuality, and more. Collecting these new essays in one volume enables a unique view of the crossovers and divergences in engagements with Austen in different settings, and will help a comparative approach between the popular and the academic to emerge more fully in Austen studies. The book gathers insights from a range of contributors invested in new reading spaces in order to show the creative ways in which we are all adapting as we continue to read Austen's works. Kerry Sinanan is Assistant Professor of Transatlantic Eighteenth and Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. She has published on Jane Austen and Barbara Pym, and many articles on Black Atlantic texts, including The Woman of Colour (1808). Annika Bautz is Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of Plymouth, UK. Her publications include books and essays on Jane Austen, Walter Scott and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and on the history of the book in the Romantic and Victorian periods. Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive introduction to medio-translatology, including its historical and literary setting, its core concept, and its practice and theory. Medio-translatology, inspired by scholarship in comparative literature and the "cultural turn" in Western translation studies, has tackled many issues which previously went unnoticed or were ignored in traditional translation studies in China; it falls within the scope of literary studies and cultural studies, extending beyond the confines of language and treating literary translations and translating as historical facts. Emerging from comparative literature, medio-translatology looks at literary translation from a new and broader perspective, and explains, with illustrative and compelling examples, that literary translation is "an act of creative treason." The originality of this approach is also evident in its distinguishing between the history of translated literature and the history of literary translation, as well as in its addressing the nature and status of translated literature. The Chinese edition of this book, being the first of its kind and well received in China, has been hailed as a milestone in exploring translation studies in the context of comparative literature in Chinese academia, and it introduces to students and researchers alike a wide range of new thoughts and ideas.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This book analyzes a range of Edgar Allan Poe's writing, focusing on new readings that engage with classical and (post)modern studies of his work and the troubling literary relationship that he had with T.S. Eliot. Whilst the book examines Poe's influence in Spain, and how his figure has been marketed to young and adult Spanish reading audiences, it also explores the profound impact that Poe had on other audiences, such as in America, Greece, and Japan, from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The essays attest to Poe's well-deserved reputation, his worldwide legacy, and his continued presence in global literature. This book will appeal particularly to university teachers, Poe scholars, graduate students, and general readers interested in Poe's oeuvre. José R. Ibáñez is Assistant Professor at the University of Almeria, Spain. He has published articles and book chapters on Comparative literature and American literature, with an emphasis on Edgar Allan Poe and the short fiction of Southern United States authors and hyphenated American authors, such as Jhumpa Lahiri and Ha Jin. Santiago Rodríguez Guerrero-Strachan is Senior Lecturer at the University of Valladolid, Spain. He has published extensively on the relations between Spanish and American literatures and on the short story. His research interests include American literature of the Romantic and Modernist periods.

Abstract

"A most timely contribution to Masculinity Studies. While most studies focus on notions of toxic masculinity, this collection adopts a refreshing approach to the subject by questioning hegemonic masculinity and by offering distinct possibilities of being a man in contemporary society. A must-read for anyone interested in changing masculinities and gender relations." -Josep M. Armengol, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain "Is masculinity still in crisis? In this colourful, erudite anthology many of the most eminent masculinity scholars use their richly diverse literary knowledge to answer this question. Their goal is to find ways of finally ridding society of continuing expressions of toxic masculinities. A necessary tonic for our times." -Lynne Segal, University of London, UK This edited volume rethinks Masculinity Studies by breaking away from the notion of the perpetual crisis of masculinity. It argues that not enough has been done to distinguish patriarchy from masculinity and proposes to detox masculinity by offering a collection of positive representations of men in fictional and non-fictional texts. The editors show how ideas of hegemonic and toxic masculinity have been too fixed on the exploration of dominance and subservience, and too little on the men (and the male characters in fiction) who behave following other ethical, personal and socially accepted patterns. Bringing together research from different periods and genres, this collection provides broad, multidisciplinary insights into alternative representations of masculinity. Sara Martín is Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Cultural Studies at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. Among her books are Masculinity and Patriarchal Villainy in British Fiction: From Hitler to Voldemort (2019) and Representations of Masculinity in Literature and Film: Focus on Men (2020). M. Abstract

This book engages with such themes by means of five case studies. In this text, the authors argue that no ethically appropriate relation to other human beings is possible unless we treat the other as genuinely other. They reveal reasons to be critical of various attempts, many of them popular in our contemporary (Western) culture, to encourage deeper attachment to and immersion into others' lives and experiences. They defend the significance of the distance between human beings and are to a certain degree writing against various cultural trends of our times in this book, criticizing the use of, e.g., the concept of empathy and related concepts in academic as well as more popular ethical contexts, across a range of issues from the nature of ethical duty to the philosophy of love. The chapters offer non-technical philosophy and cultural criticism through selected perspectives on the scale or continuum between closeness and distance. These case studies appeal to students and researchers; they explore different aspects of ethically significant relations between human beings. They show that we also have to be able to abstract from the concrete other in such relations, living in the normative and rational sphere of ethical duty.

Abstract

This book represents the first extended consideration of contemporary crime fiction as a European phenomenon. Understanding crime fiction in its broadest sense, as a transmedia practice, and offering unique insights into this practice in specific European countries and as a genuinely transcontinental endeavour, this book argues that the distinctiveness of the form can be found in its related historical and political inquiries. It asks how the genre's excavation of Europe's history of violence and protest in the twentieth century is informed by contemporary political questions. It also considers how the genre's progressive reimagining of new identities forged at the crossroads of ethnicity, gender, and sexuality is offset by its bleaker assessment of the corrosive effects of entrenched social inequalities, political corruption, and state violence. The result is a rich, vibrant collection that shows how crime fiction can help us better understand the complex relationship between Europe's past, present, and future. Seven chapters are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com. Abstract

In the early modern period, numerous texts deal with professions by presenting the knowledge required in each case, detailing individual fields of activity, purpose, origin and prestige. The course of argumentation was humanistic, insofar as it mostly started from the human being. The ancient idea of the primacy of mental work over manual work was influential. This work illuminates how Spanish representations of knowledge, professions and outstanding professional representatives are shown. Mechanical arts and artes liberales are presented on the basis of individual professions and the higher faculties of medicine, theology and jurisprudence with their representatives follow. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. The author (with the support of colleagues) has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically.
